Fred Bear "The Father of Modern Archery"

Fred Bear was born on March 5, 1902 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Although he was not introduced to bow hunting until he was 29, he developed what turned out to be a life long passion for the sport of bow hunting. In 1933 Fred Bear and an acquaintance put together $600 between them and started the Bear Products Company. While the company was formed for the printing industry, Bear quietly worked in his off hours in part of the shop hand crafting archery equipment for him and an increasing group who appreciated his workmanship. After 6 years of this Fred Bear formed the Bear Archery Company. At the time he formed his company, the demand for archery products was no where close to what it is today, so Fred Bear spent a great deal of time promoting the sport of archery. He entered numerous contests and won the Michigan state competitions in 1934, 1937, and 1939. He also traveled the sports circuit, made films and documentaries promoting the sport of archery. Fred Bear's production, promoting, and marketing helped to build the sport of archery to what it is today is why Bear is known as "The Father of Modern Archery".
